In the village of Beit Al-Tabin, in the sub-district of Al-Rughail, Maswar District – Amran Governorate – a story began, as small as the pain it held, yet as vast as the hope it carried.
Talal Osama, an infant not yet eleven months old, was born with Down syndrome. From his very first days, he faced health challenges and complications. But the real danger began when he reached seven months of age, suffering from severe acute malnutrition accompanied by a severe chest infection and high fever, bringing him to the brink of death. His weight was no more than 4.6 kg, with critically low growth indicators (Z-score below -3), alongside an almost complete loss of appetite.
His mother says, her voice trembling between fear and gratitude:
"I watched him grow weaker day by day… He couldn't breastfeed anymore, couldn't even react… I felt like I was losing him."
As part of the Integrated Lifesaving Assistance Project: Response in Food Security, Health, Nutrition, and Protection in Maswar District, Amran Governorate, along with support for Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Al-Hazm District, Al-Jawf Governorate – implemented with funding from the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF) – Talal’s family received a real chance to access lifesaving health and nutrition services.
Talal was rushed to Maswar Rural Hospital, where he was received by pediatric specialist Dr. Abdo Al-Arashi, who immediately provided emergency medical care and lifesaving medication. Due to his critical condition, Talal was referred to the Nutritional Stabilization Center at the Amran Maternity and Childhood Hospital.
Upon arrival, assessments showed a deteriorating health status: difficulty breathing due to severe pneumonia, accompanied by a very high fever and loss of appetite.
His mother adds:
"They told me his condition was critical… but I held onto hope and kept praying to God for him to survive."
Inside the stabilization center, Talal received comprehensive care including medical treatment and precise therapeutic nutrition, along with continuous follow-up. After only eight days, signs of improvement began to appear: his lungs gradually recovered, his appetite returned, and he started breastfeeding, eating, and drinking again.
His mother says with a joyful smile:
"Talal came back to me… as if he was born again. He smiles and moves now. By God, this is a great blessing."
This integrated response did not just save one child’s life; it restored hope to a family on the verge of losing what was most precious to them.
She concludes:
"If not for God, and then the project’s intervention, Talal would not be with us today. Praise be to God for everything."
