Many schools in Yemen face significant challenges, ranging from resource scarcity to traditional curricula that fail to meet students' needs, creating a sense of stress and low self-esteem among students.
During an NFDHR team visit to Asmaa School to inspect renovation work, some teachers were observed implementing active learning principles they had learned in a previous training course. These principles were applied through interactive activities and emergency education principles to provide psychological support to female students.
The application of these methods led to remarkable positive changes. The students' self-confidence increased, and they had a greater desire to participate and speak in front of others. The students were freed from fear and hesitation and developed the ability to explain lessons and manage activities. The students' academic and social skills improved, and new personalities emerged among them. Asmaa School achieved second place in the annual science competition at the directorate level.
The teachers expressed their happiness with the success of this experiment, emphasizing the importance of changing the students' reality and freeing them from any psychological effects or social barriers. One of the students said, "I bring my lessons every day, and I want my friends to explain better than me."
NFDHR provided two training courses for teachers at Asmaa School, one on formal, non-formal, and active learning and the other on emergency education and psychosocial support. These courses were part of the project to reduce protection risks and improve humanitarian conditions - education in Bani Qais Directorate, Hajjah Governorate, and Al-Luhayyah and Az-Zaidiyah Directorates, Hodeidah Governorate, funded by the Yemen Humanitarian Fund (YHF).
The story of Asmaa School demonstrates that applying modern teaching methods can bring about a significant positive change in the lives of students, and that NFDHR is committed to supporting teachers to improve the educational process in Yemen.
